Shakes the dog’s story started off rough. He was born a stray, completely deaf and with a brain disorder that limits his ability to walk. Six years later, he’s inspired his community and been made an honorary K-9 officer. He was rescued by the Florida Keys SPCA, where his reputation quickly grew. His outgoing personality, in spite of his disabilities and living on the streets, was enough to make staff and volunteers visit him on their days off.
His life turned around when he was rescued and adopted by kind human Jenna Moeller. Living with her and her two labs, this mixed-mutt with the funny underbite and great attitude, he turned into a local celebrity. He’s never scared or hiding, he’s always happy to get outside and meet people, not worried about his limitations at all. His positive influence on the community has grown so much that the local sheriff’s office has made him an honorary K-9 officer! We loved this story about Deputy Shakes and it’s a great reminder to consider adopting a dog with disabilities.
