Melissa Barrera is a Mexican actress and singer most prominently known for her role as Lyn Hernandez in the Starz television series “Vida” and her performance in the film adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “In the Heights.”
Barrera’s career took off with a significant role in the telenovela “Siempre tuya Acapulco,” which led to her gaining a broader fanbase in Mexico. However, it was her performance in “Vida,” a series about two Mexican-American sisters navigating life and love in Los Angeles, that brought her international recognition. Additionally, her appearance in “In the Heights,” a musical drama set in the Washington Heights neighborhood of New York City, received widespread critical acclaim.
Collaboratively, Barrera has worked alongside a range of artists and performers. Notable names include Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wrote and produced “In the Heights”; Mishel Prada, her co-star in “Vida”; and Leslie Grace, another star of “In the Heights.” She also worked with actors such as Corey Hawkins, Jimmy Smits, and Dascha Polanco in the same film. Additionally, Barrera teamed up with Paco León and Ana Fernández in the Spanish film “Carmen,” directed by Daniel Monzón. Outside of acting, she has collaborated with musicians like Mau y Ricky, María León, and Prince Royce for various projects.
Barrera was nominated for the Imagen Award for Best Actress in Television for her role in “Vida” and won the award in the category of Best Ensemble Cast for “In the Heights” at the Hollywood Critics Association Midseason Awards. These distinctions affirm her as a compelling artist, marking her stamp on both Mexican and international cinema.
