In 1998 he released his self-titled album when he was 19 years old. The album eventually went platinum, with Gibson becoming a host and VJ for MTV that same year.

While he continued to have success in music in the early 2000s and again in the late 2000s/early 2010s, he has also become a leading Hollywood actor. His first starring role was in Baby Boy in 2001. He is best known for his recurring role in The Fast and the Furious film series, featuring Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, and the late Paul Walker.
