Mohandas Dewese, known by his stage name Kool Moe Dee, is an American rapper who gained prominence in the early 1980s as a member of the pioneering hip-hop group The Treacherous Three. After the group disbanded, he embarked on a solo career, releasing his debut album in 1986. Kool Moe Dee is recognized for his complex lyricism, fast-paced flow, and battle rap prowess, particularly highlighted in his famous rivalry with LL Cool J. He was among the first rappers to earn a Grammy Award and was nominated for three others, marking significant achievements in the genre’s early years.

Throughout his career, Kool Moe Dee transitioned from group to solo work, releasing a total of seven studio albums. His third album, “How Ya Like Me Now” (1987), is particularly noteworthy for its critical and commercial success, featuring the hit title track that became emblematic of his feud with LL Cool J. Beyond music, Kool Moe Dee also ventured into acting, appearing in films such as “Wild Style” and “Who’s the Man?” as well as contributing to several soundtracks.

Kool Moe Dee’s impact on hip-hop is underscored by his collaborations with artists and producers across various projects. He worked with Teddy Riley, one of the key figures in the creation of new jack swing, on his album “Knowledge Is King.” Collaborations with fellow hip-hop artists such as Will Smith, for whom he co-wrote and performed on the track “Boom! Shake the Room.” Additionally, Kool Moe Dee contributed to the pioneering hip-hop track “Self Destruction” alongside Public Enemy’s Chuck D and KRS-One.
