JD Vance
J.D. Vance is an American politician, author, and venture capitalist, currently serving as a U.S. Senator from Ohio since 2023. He first gained national recognition with his 2016 memoir Hillbilly Elegy, which explores his upbringing in a working-class, Appalachian family and the social challenges faced by that community. The memoir became a bestseller and was later adapted into a Netflix film in 2020, further raising his profile. Vance’s early life in Middletown, Ohio, was marked by poverty and family instability, as his mother struggled with addiction, leading to him primarily being raised by his grandparents.
Before entering politics, Vance graduated from Yale Law School and worked as a venture capitalist. He later transitioned into the political arena, running for and winning his Senate seat in 2022. His political views are characterized by his alignment with right-wing populism and national conservatism, and he is a vocal critic of policies such as abortion rights and military aid to Ukraine. In 2024, Vance became the Republican vice-presidential nominee, running alongside former President Donald Trump.
