Sean Kinney
Sean Kinney is an American musician and songwriter known for his influential role as the drummer of the rock band Alice in Chains. Kinney formed Alice in Chains in 1987 along with Layne Staley. As a founding member of the band, he played a pivotal role in shaping their unique sound, blending elements of heavy metal, alternative rock, and grunge. Kinney’s drumming style, characterized by its powerful beats and intricate patterns, became a defining aspect of Alice in Chains’ music.
Alice in Chains’ breakthrough album, “Dirt,” released in 1992, remains one of the band’s most significant milestones. Kinney’s drumming on tracks like “Would?,” “Rooster,” and “Down in a Hole” showcased his technical skill and ability to create dynamic rhythms that perfectly complemented the band’s dark and introspective lyrics.
Kinney has collaborated with various artists and celebrities throughout his career including Heart, the renowned rock band fronted by sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson. Kinney joined Heart on stage for a special performance of Alice in Chains’ hit song “Rooster” during the 2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
Kinney also worked with metal icon Dave Grohl, frontman of Foo Fighters and former drummer of Nirvana. Kinney and Grohl worked together on the song “A Little Bitter” from Alice in Chains’ self-titled album released in 1995.
