Kim Myung-jun (MJ)
Kim Myung-jun, commonly known by the moniker MJ, has etched his name into the annals of the South Korean music scene as a distinguished vocalist of the popular K-pop band, ASTRO.
Gaining recognition in the Korean entertainment industry was a journey for MJ, which started when he joined the band ASTRO, formed by Fantagio in 2016. The band’s debut extended play (EP), “Spring Up”, struck a chord with K-pop aficionados worldwide, paving the way for MJ’s successful career. The EP reached 4th on the Gaon Music Chart and 6th on the Billboard World Albums Chart, a testament to the band’s instant appeal. Apart from band activities, MJ showcased his wide array of talents through hosting stints like “Show! Music Core” and voice acting in the animated film “The Underdog.”
MJ’s collaborative ventures have been as noteworthy as his individual successes, enriching his music and providing a platform for artistic growth. Among his collaborators are the members of ASTRO, including JinJin, Cha Eun-woo, Moon Bin, Rocky, and Yoon San-ha, who have been instrumental in MJ’s creative journey. MJ has also shared the stage with fellow Fantagio artists such as Weki Meki, Hello Venus, and Seo Kang-joon. Further, he has worked with industry veterans like Kim Gura and Kim Sook in the variety show realm. His collaborations extend beyond South Korea, having worked with international artists such as DJ Khaled on a unique version of “I’m The One” for a special stage performance.
In terms of recognition, MJ’s unique vocal prowess and dynamic stage presence have earned him and his band, ASTRO, substantial recognition. One prime example is their win for “New Wave Award” at the Asia Artist Awards in 2016. In 2019, they received their first music show win on SBS MTV’s “The Show” for their song “All Night”, which was a momentous occasion for MJ and his bandmates.
