Meet Rio the ‘Loaner Dog’ Who You Can Borrow to Go Hiking or Snowshoeing at a Mountain Lodge in Idaho

If you happen to visit Galena Lodge in Idaho, you can request a very special and very furry tour guide to hit the trails with you! So instead of having a traditional human staff member accompany you while you go hiking or snowshoeing, you can request Rio, aka “The Loaner Dog.”

You can find him overlooking the crowd waiting patiently for the next lucky he’s going to show around. And his rate? Just some extra pets and treats are all he charges for this exclusive service.

One of Galena Lodge’s guests posted a video of Rio that went viral, so you might want to visit him quick before his celebrity status results in long wait times!

This very good two-year-old boy is half husky-half shepherd, so he was truly born for this career.

But Rio does like to take it easy some days and just stay in and watch the game.

While Rio is the official “Loaner Dog,” he does have a small team that helps out when they have time. Rio and his team’s parents are all staff at the lodge. And prior to Rio, the former owners of the lodge started the “Loaner Dog” tradition that Rio proudly took over for in April 2023.

You can follow @rio_the_loaner_dog and @galenalodge on Instagram. For another pup that loves playing in powder, meet Kitty Jacob Astor II, the charming canine concierge at the St. Regis Hotel in Aspen.
