Tim Walz
Tim Walz is an American politician currently serving as the 41st governor of Minnesota. A Democrat, Walz has a diverse background as a former U.S. Army non-commissioned officer, educator, and legislator. Before his tenure as governor, he represented Minnesota’s 1st congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2007 to 2019. Walz’s political journey began in rural Nebraska, where he was born and raised before moving to Minnesota, where he built his career and life.
Walz’s early career was deeply rooted in education. After earning a Bachelor of Science in social science education from Chadron State College, he taught in various settings, including on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and in China through WorldTeach. He eventually settled in Mankato, Minnesota, where he taught geography and coached football at Mankato West High School, leading the team to its first state championship in 1999. In addition to his teaching career, Walz served in the Army National Guard for 24 years, retiring with the rank of Command Sergeant Major.
As a member of Congress, Walz was known for his moderate Democratic views and his commitment to veterans’ issues, agricultural policies, and education. His legislative accomplishments include securing increased funding for veterans’ health care and benefits, advocating for rural communities, and promoting renewable energy initiatives.
In his role as governor, Walz has focused on a wide range of issues, including education, healthcare, and environmental sustainability. His administration has implemented significant policies such as expanding voter rights, protecting abortion rights, and committing Minnesota to 100% clean energy by 2040. He has also managed state responses to the COVID-19 pandemic and the civil unrest following the death of George Floyd.
Walz’s vice-presidential candidacy alongside Kamala Harris in the 2024 election has brought him into the national spotlight. Tim Walz’s dedication to public service is reflected in the awards and recognition he has received over the years. As a teacher, he was honored for his contributions to education and his support of student initiatives. His military service earned him several commendations, including the Army Commendation Medal and two Army Achievement Medals.
