Sabrina Elaine Ionescu is an American professional basketball player for the New York Liberty of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). She played college basketball for the Oregon Ducks and is celebrated for her record-breaking achievements in the sport. Ionescu is recognized as the NCAA all-time leader in career triple-doubles and the only NCAA Division I basketball player to record 2,000 points, 1,000 assists, and 1,000 rebounds in a career.

Ionescu’s journey to stardom began at Miramonte High School in Orinda, California, where she established herself as a formidable player. Her high school career was marked by impressive statistics and numerous awards, including being named the USA Today Girls Basketball Player of the Year and the Gatorade State Player of the Year. At the University of Oregon, Ionescu continued to excel, setting records and earning multiple Player of the Year awards. Her collegiate career culminated in being selected as the first overall pick in the 2020 WNBA Draft by the New York Liberty.

Throughout her career, Ionescu has collaborated with numerous notable figures in the basketball world. She played under coach Kelly Sopak in high school and later under coach Kelly Graves at Oregon. In the WNBA, she has been coached by Walt Hopkins and has played alongside prominent players like Kia Nurse, Layshia Clarendon, and Betnijah Laney. Ionescu’s influence extends beyond the court, as she has also been involved in various initiatives and events with figures such as Kobe Bryant, with whom she shared a close mentor-mentee relationship.

Ionescu’s list of awards and distinctions is extensive. She is a two-time WNBA All-Star (2022, 2023) and has been named to the All-WNBA Second Team twice (2022, 2023). Her other notable achievements include winning the WNBA Three-Point Shootout in 2023 and being part of the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup Champion team in the same year. At the collegiate level, her accolades include the Naismith Player of the Year (2020), AP Player of the Year (2020), USBWA Player of the Year (2020), and the Honda Sports Award (2020), among others.
