David Backes is an American former professional ice hockey player known for his tenure in the NHL with the St. Louis Blues, Boston Bruins, and Anaheim Ducks. He was the captain of the Blues and represented the United States in international competitions, including the Winter Olympics.

Backes was drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the second round of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. He played for the Blues from 2006 to 2016 and became the team’s captain in 2011. Backes was selected for the NHL All-Star Game and won the NHL Foundation Player Award for his charitable work. In 2016, he signed with the Boston Bruins, playing with the team until 2020. He was then traded to the Anaheim Ducks, where he finished his NHL career. Backes represented the United States in the Winter Olympics, winning a silver medal in 2010, and competed in the IIHF World Championships.

Backes collaborated with several notable players throughout his career. In St. Louis, he played alongside T.J. Oshie and Alex Pietrangelo. At the Boston Bruins, he worked with Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand. In Anaheim, he played with Ryan Getzlaf and John Gibson. Backes represented the United States in international competitions with Patrick Kane and Ryan Suter.
