Part Malamute, part arctic wolf, part husky and all good boy, Loki the Wolfdog is one man’s best friend. Kelly Lund brought Loki home as a pup during a blizzard in 2012. The two immediately started going on adventures together, Lund had Loki backcountry snowboarding when he was only four months old. Kelly has some explicit thoughts on how to treat our four legged friends, stating that he “doesn’t believe dogs are meant to live out their lives in a backyard or inside a house”.
Before Loki’s third birthday, he had seen most of the western U.S. The pair adventures through the wilderness, taking some astonishingly good photos, much like Adventure Cats Bolt and Keel and the helicopter-loving Mr Bentley. They reside in Denver, Colorado and explore as much of the world as they can.
Lund only recently began taking photography seriously. He is now using it as a platform to inspire and encourage people to get out and explore their world with their pups. Loki has a million and a half followers on Instagram; the love shared between Kelly, himself and the outdoors radiates through the photographs.
Although Loki looks like a massive, fuzzy, friendly beast (or, more like a Game of Thrones Direwolf to some) Lund reminds us that raising a wolfdog isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. Kelly The dogs need a ton of socialization and exercise. They can also be destructive and escape easily from backyards, something Kelly has experienced first hand even though Loki is a “low-content” wolfdog (more dog than wolf). Most people underestimate the amount of work that goes into a wolfdog and so, many are in need of adoption.
Loki and his dad do tons of charity work, they support different avenues in the dog loving community. They give donations from the profits they make off of Loki’s fame, including organizations that are dedicated to helping wolfdogs and wolves, like the U.S. Wolf Refuge.
They have a website full of swag available, including coffee mugs, T-shirts and calendars. They also offer prints of Kelly’s photography featuring Loki, of course.
They were the first social media influencer to be the main sponsor of an IndyCar at Long Beach’s Toyota Grand Prix. They had Loki’s name and picture plastered across a Spencer Pigot’s racecar.
Loki occasionally wanders through the forest by himself; Kelly attaches a GPS tracking device to his collar so the two can reunite when Loki’s done his solo adventure.
