Hero Dog Awards: Meet the Top 7 Finalists

You’ve heard the heartwarming heroic animal tales, from bomb-sniffing rats to doggo’s in goggles digging through collapsed buildings for earthquake survivors. But have you heard of the awards ceremony to honour these legendary pups? The American Humane Hero Dog Awards is an annual campaign which recognizes the dogs who start out ordinary and go on to do extraordinary things.

Interactive art has gone to the dogs (and cats!) at this live pet-only exhibition

Human’s have had a monopoly on the art world for too long, and one Singapore petfood company is taking a stand. Launched by Silversky and funded by Wellness Pet Food, PAW:sitive is an interactive art exhibition for pets, exclusively. The art exhibition will have 10 different interactive art and play areas, all created by local artists.

Earthquake devastates Mexico, four legged doggo heroes come to the rescue!

Entire cities were destroyed when a 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit central Mexico, coming just two weeks after a magnitude 8.1 quake affected southern Mexico. The 7.1 magnitude tremor comes 32 years to the day after Mexico was hit with one of the deadliest earthquakes in it’s history. The country has banded together in search and rescue missions; humans and dogs alike are digging through the rubble to unearth survivors.

Hero Rats sniff out bombs and disease, making the world a better place

They train African giant pouched rats (affectionately called Hero Rats) to detect landmines and tuberculosis; their mission is “to develop detection rats technology to provide solutions for global problems and inspire social change.” So, basically they’re a superhero squad with giant rats.

Tortoises, cats and dog inherit tens of thousands from bookshop tycoon Christina Foyle

Silverstone the tortoise inherited $27,000 when his former owner, bookshop tycoon Christina Foyle, passed away in 1999. Ultimately, she left behind a $120,000,000 fortune, a chaotic bookshop, and a number of wealthy pets. She bequeathed $200,000 to her gardener, Anthony Scillitoe so that he and his wife could care for her pets after her death.

Norbert, a 3lb philanthropist mixed breed mutt is one of a kind. He’s a “philosopher, intuitive healer, and fashion-forward snappy dresser”. Or at least his mom thinks so.

Hero dog Luca comes out of retirement for one last job

Heroes come in all shapes and sizes, this particular one is a retiree covered in fur. Luca is an eleven year old German Shepherd (which is 77 in dog years) who was called to duty last year when an elderly gentleman with Alzheimer’s went missing. Two older men visited a salvage yard in Fort Worth, the day was going well until one of the men disappeared.

Hero Doggo: US Marine Cena served 3 tours in Afghanistan, gets tearful sendoff after terminal cancer

Hundreds gathered in Michigan to salute and say goodbye to a true four-legged hero. Cena was a 10-year-old black labrador and a US marine who served three tours of duty in Afghanistan. In 2009, Cena served his first tour as a bomb sniffer with human marine Jeff DeYoung and again in 2010.
