Looking to add a little bit of the wild into your home? Then why not consider getting yourself a hippo! These adorable creatures have been terrorizing rural areas around Colombia, but they could make wonderful pets for the right owner. You’ll need plenty of space for them to roam.
One uniquely heartwarming story that came from the devastating Indian Ocean tsunami in December 2004, is the story of Owen the hippo and Mzee the tortoise. Also known as the Boxing Day Tsunami, this tsunami resulted from the third-largest recorded earthquake in history. While it happened in Asia, it was so strong it even affected the east coast of Africa 4,000 miles away.
Yes, you read that right. And no, Pablo Escobar’s hippos are not facing a possible death sentence for drug trafficking and organized crime. Back in the 1980s, notorious drug kingpin Pablo Escobar created a personal exotic zoo on his Colombian estate.
Pablo Escobar may be long gone, but his hippos live on. The Colombian drug-lord was shot in 1993, leaving the government to take control of his northwestern Colombian estate. That estate included four of Escobar’s favourite hippopotamuses.

We all know America has had some wild leaders in the past (and present) but what about their pets? The most common animal to grace the White House is a dog, and the long standing tradition of having man’s best friend lay down at the wise leader’s’ feet is rarely deviated from. We’d like to suggest some canine options to Donald Trump, since he’s the first prez with no pup.

After 25 years since drug kingpin Pablo Escobar was killed, his pet hippo cartel continues to thrive in Columbia. In 1981, Escobar bought four hippos from the San Diego Zoo and flew them on a military Hercules aircraft to his private zoo on his massive estate called Hacienda Napoles. He reportedly paid $2 million USD in cash, which equals to around $5.3 million in 2017.
